Divorce (Noun): total separation; disunion: a divorce between thought and action.

I had this idea the other day to create a post of the worst split-ups in Sports history. I’m sure I missed a couple, so please comment below if you can think of any that I wasn’t thinking of. Otherwise enjoy the post as I countdown what I think are the Top Five Sports Divorces. Enjoy.

When ESPN, the worldwide leader in Sports, aired Sportscenter – the most popular national television sports news broadcast – in September 1979 they had no idea how big it would get. Think about it, when you are having a slow summer morning and you are, at least, somewhat of a sports fan odds are you are going to take a glance at any of their morning broadcasts during that time. In order to publicize the show in 1994, they debuted a new series of advertisements now commonly known as “This is Sportscenter” ads (it is the slogan that appears at the end of every one of the commercials). So I saw one of the ads on ESPN the other day and wondered to myself what the funniest “This is Sportscenter” (a.k.a. TIS) commercials were… so I did some research and found some funny stuff.

6 – Ocho-BLINK-o – The brightest light in the NFL let’s some of the Sportscenter Anchors give him Endzone Dance ideas. The Best line without a doubt was, “BOOYAH…hah…..booNO.”

With the U.S. Women’s World Cup Soccer Team coming off of one of the most unbelievable, memorable moments in World Cup History with Abby Wambach’s stoppage time in extra time header goal a lot of talk has risen about what the top sports moments in the last ten years have been. So I ask, where does the U.S. Women’s Goal this past Sunday rank among the most enthralling moments in the past ten years in Sports?

As I brainstormed moments for this article, I remembered why I am a sports fan; it is because of the periodic magic that ignites the fans. I reviewed these highlights and a couple of them I sat there and thought about where I was and what I did once it happened. I tried to remember the ones that I had gone the most crazy over, and by no means is this perfect; however it should be very suitable for this category.

Once a year some of the world’s major athletes come together to watch the presentation of the ESPY Awards. The presentation of the 19th-annual ESPY is set to take place once again in the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California, and for the year is set to be hosted by the comical Saturday-Night Live actor and comedian Seth Meyers. What makes the awards so watchable is not the fact that the ESPYs are Sporting Worlds equivalent of the Oscars or Emmys, it is due to the fact that they are unbelievably funny. For example, during the 2010 ESPYs Comedian/Actor Steve Carrell and Comedian/Actor Paul Rudd were seen in a skit that essentially made fun of the most criticized moments in sports history; the program starring LeBron James ‘The Decision’.

At the end of every month on the EastSide we take a moment to step back and view the realm of sports as one entity. This Top Ten may include Highlights, Stories, etc., ultimately helping the fan get a feel for what I thought were the best of sports for the month of June 2011.

What can I say about the month of June? It is where the beginning of summer meets the blood, sweat, and determination of a team to reach the Finals – in both the NBA and the NHL. June is the month in which athletes take their games to another level…and then they take it a little higher. The end goal is in sight, and three of the grandest prizes in sports are on the line – The Larry O’Brien, Stanley Cup, and the US Open Trophies. This June however was different, however, because some surprise stories took place; this month select athletes took the initiative to write their own stories, it made for an intriguing month to say the least. So without further adieu, let the countdown begin.
