If you have been following this blog for a while now, you probably know my feelings on Black Hippy. And those feelings are that they are my favorite group in the game today (just ahead of Slaughterhouse, The Dean’s List and Pac Div). For those of you who aren’t familiar with Black Hippy, they are a super-group consisting of Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock repping the west coast to the fullest. Despite only have released only five tracks as a group, they have made waves individually. They have all done huge things on their own, but it’s time you got introduced to the group as a whole.

So I’m going to start doing something new here at the ESP. Every Wednesday night around 10:00 I’m going to do something similar to the New Music of the Week posts. I’m going to select five different tracks that have been on rotation the most during the past week. They can be new, old, rap, rock, pop, whatever. I’ll talk a little about each track and give you a stream, download, ect. It’s just going to be about good music. The posts are normally going to more around ten o’clock, not this late. So without further adieu hit the jump for the first edition of Wednesday Night Shuffle and be on the lookout for them every Wednesday night!

Black Hippy member, Jay Rock is ready to release his debut album, Follow Me Home, July 26th after numerous delays. The Watts rapper is signed to the two most successful independent labels, Top Dawg and Strange Music. As I stated above, Jay is a member of the west coast collective known as Black Hippy, also containing rappers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q. They are my favorite group in the game today (sorry Slaughterhouse), however I think think Jay Rock is the weakest link in the group by far. He is just too “hood” or “street” for my liking. I feel like they should switch out Jay Rock for Dom Kennedy or H.O.P.E. or Fashawn, but that’s an argument for a different day. Well how did Jay Rock’s debut stack up with other releases from Black Hippy? Check out the review of Follow Me Home below!

The west coast is on the revival with is a hotbed for up and coming artists. The biggest of those artists may be the Black Hippy group, made up of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. As a collective they haven’t dropped much together, but individually they are dropping hits after hits. Kendrick Lamar has dropped O(verley) D(edicated) and has worked with Dr. Dre, Ab-Soul has dropped the critically acclaimed Longterm 1, 2 and 3 albums, Jay Rock is signed by Tech N9NE and has worked with artists such as Lil Wayne and The Game, the outsider of the group is Schoolboy Q. He is probably the least known of the Black Hippy collective but without a doubt, the most underrated. Q brings the aggressive, witty lines that standout in his songs. With the release of his first big time mixtape, Setbacks he hopes to step out from behind the shadows and into the spotlight.
