According to Merriam-Websters Dictionary, a forte’ is a strong point. Well Gilbere (pronounced jil-bear) Forte’ embodies every part of the word. He reps Philly to the fullest, however Gilbere isn’t Philly born, that would be Flint, Michigan. When his parents separated at an early age he moved with his mother to Chicago before finding his true home in Philadelphia in 1999. Despite all the turbulence, music has always been in Gilbere’s life. He was know to recite the raps of his favorite emcees as early as the age of nine. Gilbere has been perfecting his art ever since then, and what I can say is he pretty close to perfecting. With the whole city buzzing about him, come see why Gilbere Forte’ is ready to break through and make it on the national scene!

If I were to compare his style to some, it would be a combination between Freeway, Tayyib Ali and Black Thought. He has that gritty Freeway sound to him, the more mainstream new-school rap Tayyib Ali vibe and the lyrical prowess of a Black Thought. He has the entire package you want in an emcee. Gilbere Forte’s first project, 87 Dreams, was released a year ago today to much acclaim from critics and fans a like. The tape demonstrated Gilbere’s talent behind the mic and diversity in his music. It contained many standouts such as Valerie Mimosa, 30,000 Feet, The Best and Cold Summer. But the best record off the entire tape (and my favorite Gilbere Forte’ track so far) is Black Chukkas. It displays Gilbere’s killer flow, but the beat is the true star of the show. The track is a certified banger.

Valerie Mimosa has an electric kind of MGMT vibe to it, but Gilbere stills holds it down behind the mic. While Cold Summer is heavily rock influenced with guitar riffs and monster verses from Gilbere. The Best has Gilbere venting for almost five minutes and 30,000 Feet is the classic rap record. 87 Dreams was an excellent project from the Philly Freshman and it placed him among some of the brightest rising stars in the game. His second project, titled EYES of VERITAS, was more mainstream as it had features from Emilio Rojas, Joel Ortiz, Reek Da Villian and Don Trip and had production from Boi-1da, Lex Luger and B!nk (produced Kanye West’s Devil In a New Dress). The standouts of the tape included The Eyes, The Exports and Born In 87 among many others. The Exports is the posse cut that every album needs and it contains verses from Emilio Rojas, Joell Ortiz, Reek Da Villain and Murda Mook. Everyone goes in and it is one of the best posse cuts of the year. 87 Dreams has that Philly feel to it and is the best track on the tape. All in all it was a solid sophomore effort from the Philly emcee, but I’m going to have to give the nod to 87 Dreams for being better overall. Gilbere also made some serious features in 2010 as he appeared on the Alors On Danse Remix with Kanye West, the Dog Days Are Over Remix by Florence + The Machines and the Everday (Coolin’) Remix by Swizz Beatz with Eve.

Gilbere has dropped two great mixtapes in 87 Dreams and EYES of VERITAS. He also is a fresh new style for the game, with dope beats, solid lyrics and crazy flow. With a new project, 87 Dreams to Reality, on the way and his new single Burn Me Down featuring Tyga, making waves on iTunes; the sky is truly the limit for the up and coming emcee from Philly.
