Look familiar? He should. Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino is a rapper/comedian/actor/writer, in other words, he lives and extremely busy life. Glover is well known from the TV shows such as 30 Rock and Community, so when I first heard that he rapped I thought it was a joke. From his crazy name which he found off the Wu-Tang name generator (mine is Detective Ventriloquist btw) and the fact that it seems like he can’t be serious, there was no way he would be any good. But let me tell you, I couldn’t be any farther from the truth at all.

Glover uses his tongue-twisting rhymes and purposely geeky references, but never forsakes passion for playfulness. Instead, he blends an animated, overly boastful character with one of true heart and intensity. Some people mistake this for “joke rap”, but it is just Glover being who he is. He is not that great of a lyricist, as he raps about the usual suspects; drugs, money and girls. But he might be the best one-liner I have ever heard. Dropping lines such as “I be steady getting paper, call a n***a Dunder-Mifflen”, “I’m the boss, Michael Scott, ya’ll b*****s is just Phyllis” and “NBC is not the only thing I’m coming on tonight, gross, why the f***k I say these things?”. Glover can not only rap, but on some songs such as “These Girls” and “Got This Money”, he even tries to hold a note and he even manages to succeed, further extending his area of talent. After a couple of mixtape releases that didn’t go over well such as Sick Boi and I am Just a Rapper, Glover couldn’t seem to hit the right note. Then it all changed when he released a full length LP, entitled Culdesac in summer 2010. In my opinion it was one of the best pieces of work last year. With standouts such as I Be On That, Do Ya Like and The Last, it really was a great album. On Do Ya Like, Glover incorporates an Adele sample perfectly as he drops dope line after dope line. Then in The Last he gives a full summary of his life story and how Tina Fey is his role model. Later early this year Glover dropped a 5 song EP with the single Freaks and Geeks. Freaks and Geeks is probably the best Childish Gambino song to date as it really showcases his true talents as an MC. Overall the EP was stacked front to back with great listens, with The Glory being the only pass for me.

The further I look into who Donald Glover really is, the more impressed I become. From what it seems, he can do anything or make any type of song. Whether it is rap or pop or rock, I have no doubt he will pull it off. With all this talent in hand, the sky is the limit for Donald Glover.

Great post. I’m right there with you on Childish. I’ve seen him live twice, and he’s pretty incredible live. Once opening for Mayer Hawthorne, and I just recently saw his IAmDonald tour at the TLA in Philly. It was incredible. Well thought out lyrics, multi-talented, and makes amazing beats. You haven’t seen anything until you see him live though. The emotion and anger that he pours out is nothing short of moving. Great blog, great post…I look forward to reading more!
